Abstract
A development effort aimed at the design of single mode fiber optic cables capable of withstanding the radiation and environmental effects of a space deployment is described. The program is structured in two parallel phases. The first addresses the fiber and related material optimization. The second phase emphasizes the cable design and related material to ensure a twelve-year uninterrupted service. The proposed radiation hard fiber contains H2, with the concentration of H2 optimized for enhanced radiation hardness during the expected service life of the fiber. The optical fiber is packaged in an all dielectric cable structure incorporating materials which ensure fiber stability at temperatures from -150 to +150 C.
