Abstract
Cuneiform inscriptions has been studied recently using holographically based methods. The goal was to preserve the written information by using the high-resolution and 3D possibilities of holographic recording as well as to investigate the cuneiform inscription signs in the sense of characterizing different types of writing. Here we present the experimental results of the characterization of the cuneiform inscription signs obtained by using an original recognition algorithm and a hybrid device based on liquid crystal displays. Preliminary results which demonstrate the usefulness of both wavelet and matched spatial filtering are given.
