Abstract

Use of luminance-chrominance separation in all forms of picture coding is so current that the reasons which have conducted to this state are often forgotten. These reasons are reminded and the deviations from the principles in present use pointed out. Main deviations are matrixing of gamma-corrected instead of linear primary signals and matrixing with coefficients corresponding to a colorimetric system today abandoned in actual fact.
