Abstract
Transmittance of curved optical fibers is examined as a means for measuring refractive index (RI) of the surrounding medium. The transmitted flux is measured experimentally for U-shaped glass fibers with radii of curvature ranging from 3:1 to co:1, nine liquids of different RI's, and light sources at S different wavelengths. Flux angular spread was controlled by altering the distance between source and fiber. Measurements of the transmitted flux as a function of these three parameters were obtained at approximately 1000 parameter values. The results are compared with two recent ray tracing simulations. Comparison leads to simplification of the computer analysis, and indicates the importance of the angular spread at the fiber entrance for control of the sensitivity. These conclusions enable optimization of curved fiber sensors for practical applications.
