Abstract
Spectral measurements of dielectric multilayer coatings that are exposed to vacuum or high humidity indicate that ion-plate coatings are very stable and capable of retaining their spectral characteristics within the recording's linewidth, unlike conventional electron beam-deposited coatings. The deposition of dense, dielectric thin films improves the durability and survivability of optical coatings in hostile environments. Reactive low-voltage ion plating is identified as the most versatile deposition process, with the least problematic upscaling.
