Abstract
A high lateral resolution and large depth of field cannot be simultaneously obtained by using conventional optical focusing elements. The combination of Abbe's and Rayleigh's formulas show that the focal depth is proportional to the square of the focus spot size for these elements. On the other hand, by using a holographic optical focusing lens, one can obtain an axial focus line which confers a high lateral resolution and a large depth of field on a 3-D active vision system.
