Abstract
A comparative study of image processing techniques examines optical, hybrid and digital methods. System capabilities are evaluated with emphasis on text processing applications. Results show the strengths of each method. Optical processing is best for wide bandwidth parallel processing. Digital processing is the most versatile and interactive processing technique. Hybrid systems show strong potential dependent upon the development of improved image transducers. A discussion of a variety of image processing hardware accompanies the evaluation.
