Abstract
We have developed a new algorithm for generating color Doppler ultrasound images, i.e., gray-scale images with color velocity overlays. By combining the blood flow velocity computation (VC) and tissue/flow decision (TFD) algorithms into one, our algorithm requires less computing cycles since the time-consuming process of VC is not needed if a pixel is determined to be tissue by the TFD. Our algorithm has been developed so that it can run efficiently on superscalar and very long instruction word processors that can perform multiple operations concurrently. Our algorithm is also designed to handle the tissue and flow characterization and velocity computations concurrently with the input and output (I/O) data loading. Thus, the processing unit's computing power can be dedicated to performing pixel-based operations while the I/O operations are handled by an independent direct memory access controller. Our integrated VC/TFD algorithm was implemented on a multimedia and imaging system based on the Texas Instruments TMS320C80 Multimedia Video Processor. An execution time of 16.6 ms was achieved when the input data are comprised of one 304 X 498 12-bit complex image from the autocorrelator of an ultrasound machine's color flow unit, one 304 X 498 12-bit power image, and one 304 X 498 12-bit gray-scale image.
