18 April 2000 Practical quality control standards for digital display monitors

Abstract
We present two-tiered QC standards for grayscale monitors. Materials: SMPTE test pattern, line-pair object, radio- opaque ruler, photometer, and magnifier with scale. Results: The following standards are based on our institutional experience in association with a PACS vendor and the literature. Radiologists monitor: small artifacts, disregard <EQ 0.25 mm, 0.25 mm < 2 < 0.35 mm, 0 >= 0.35 mm; no groupings of artifacts; no visible distortion in the 'usable' area; background luminance 0.1 Fl; 'bright' >= 90 Fl, no fine-detail 'blooming'; brightness uniformity <EQ +/- 15 percent of mean value, no visible gradients, measured in at least 9 positions; scales 98 percent; 2.5 linepair/mm visible; 0/5-95/100 SMPTE contrast patches visible; illuminance 50 lux. Clinician monitor; small artifacts disregard <EQ 0.35 mm < 4 < 0.50 mm, 0 >= 0.50 mm; luminance 50 Fl; uniformity <EQ +/- 20 percent, if > +/- 20 percent at only 2 points, these locations can be tested to +/- 20 percent within the local sector; 1 linepair/mm visible; else same. Conclusions: We believe this approach is reasonably achievable.
