Abstract
A powerful Hamiltonian theory, recently developed, permits to predict numerically the mode coupling properties of mono and multimode optical fibers with any index pro-file. Theoretical and experimental results are presented;the observation of a sharp radiation light cone emitted by a localized point of a pseudo-periodically deformed fiber has resulted in the realization of a simple non-destructive fiber coupler with tunable splitting ratio. This coupler can be used f.i. for local temporary control on a fiber link.
