Abstract
Waveguide lenses are a critical component of many integrated optical devices. A new design method is presented, which allows the fabrication of high-performance lenses by conventional photolithography and diffusion processes. The focussing properties of these lenses have been computer simulated using a ray tracing approach. The evaluated characteristics are very good and suggest that these lenses can find immediate applications in integrated optical signal processors.
