Abstract
We design two laser ranging instruments (chaotic lidar and chaotic optical time domain reflectometer) using broadband chaotic light for free space and optical fiber. The laser diode with external optical feedback cavity is utilized to realize the chaotic light, and the chaotic light is divided into reference light and probe light by a splitter or an optical coupler. The target position can be achieved from the main peak of the cross-correlation trace, computed by the correlation function between the reference and probe light, and the spatial resolution is independent of the length which is determined by the full width at half maximum of correlation curve. Our instruments can range at least 130 m with 18 cm resolution in free space and 68-km with 6cm resolution in optical fiber.
