An intriguing approach to add unique photonic properties to glass is the generation of luminescent particles in the glass. This is achieved either by doping of ex-situ prepared nanocrystals into glass or by in-situ growth of nanocrystals in the glass. This paper will present recent progress on direct doping of upconversion nanocrystals for fundamental investigations, various doping technique of diamond nano-/micro-crystals for magnetic field sensing as well as precipitation of gold nanoparticles for plasmonic-based applications.
