Abstract
An analysis of the asymmetric response from the opposite device facets is performed. Attention is devoted to those mechanisms and their microscopic origins that make the feedback adversely affect differential quantum efficiency in a single-mode laser. Similarities to a laser with a saturable absorber are shown, and instabilities related to the nonlinear behavior of the characteristic curve are discussed. A key is obtained to the description and control of the nonlinearity of the characteristic curve in the region just above threshold (kink), providing a feedback-driven bistability in the system.
