Substitution of electrical links by their optoelectronics (OE) counterparts has been regularly debated for more than a decade. The potential advantages of the optical over the electrical links, at all levels of electronic systems, have been examined by many researchers using generic approaches (see for instance Refs. 1–4 and references therein).
