This paper summarizes advancements in ruggedization and miniaturization of high performance Retinal Scanning Display (RSD) Systems. This paper focuses initially on the photonics subsystem, which has been reduced to less than 4% the size of earlier versions. The paper then presents successful results of environmental testing on critical components of the photonics subsystem to demonstrate the system enhancements in optical modulation, fiber coupling and color combining. This paper also reports success in environmental testing of the color combing modules, which proves the viability of this critical component and sets the stage for future environmental qualification of the RSD systems in military and other environmentally stringent applications.
This paper will start with a brief discussion of the high-resolution retinal scanning display (RSD) system architecture. The remainder of the paper will concentrate on the design and implementation of a miniaturized light modulation system used within a multi-beam RSD. Significant size and weight reduction, and good modularity are obtained using a custom designed, multi-channel AOM having the outgoing diffracted beam in-line with the incoming beam. Optical and mechanical design considerations of the acousto-optic based modulator and of the color combining module will be covered.
The Virtual Retinal DisplayTM (VRDTM) technology is a new display technology being developed at Microvision Inc. The displayed image is scanned onto the viewer's retina using low- power red, green, and blue light sources. Microvision's proprietary miniaturized scanner designs make VRD system very well suited for head-mounted displays. In this paper we discuss some of the advantages of the VRD technology, various ocular designs for HMD and other applications, and details of constructing a system MTF budget for laser scanning systems that includes electronics, modulators, scanners, and optics.
