SPIE Involvement:
Author
Area of Expertise:
physical optics , polarization optics , electronic packaging , color science , optical composite materials , precision measurement & automated testing
Profile Summary

Experience in the development, prototyping, and manufacturing of precision optical assemblies, as well as in applying optical technologies to interdisciplinary projects.

Expertise in optics supplemented by experience in chemical and materials analyses, electronic packaging, reliability engineering, and thin film processes/ design.

Currently an instructor for Breault Research Organization’s Introductory ASAP tutorial and BRO’s topical ASAP tutorials in Wave Optics and in Stray Light Analysis. A passion for teaching is exercised worldwide. Also answer user questions about ASAP usage, problem solving techniques, and strategies for the simulation of new applications.

Before joining BRO, Jon worked in several technology segments. At IBM, his work included thermal analysis of high performance integrated circuits and electronic packaging, automated inspection of circuit structures using image analysis, reliability and risk analysis of electronics (from inexpensive network processors to the most exotic multiprocessor packages), working in alliance to build systems using IBM components, and extensive facilities planning of large engineering laboratories.

At Agilent, Jon was part of several teams developing precision lightwave analysis instruments, including spectrum analyzers, polarization analyzers, and one of the first terahertz optical oscilloscopes. He promoted efficient delivery of cutting-edge technologies by developing partnerships with suppliers and building tightly-coupled supply chains in optical devices. His hands-on work included prototyping, diagnosing manufacturing issues, and creating effective manufacturing tests.

Jon’s graduate research was interdisciplinary work in photorefractive polymer material development. The results were milestones in the understanding of photorefractive behavior over shorter time scales, in improved life performance, and in the demonstration of commercial processing potential via injection molding.
