Ci-Ling Pan is Professor Emeritus, Physics and Photonics, Honorary Life Chair, College of Sciences, National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), Hsinchu, Taiwan. He joined NTHU in 2009 and was appointed Tsing Hua Chair Professor until his retirement in 2019. At NTHU, he served in various capacities: Chair of the Physics Department and Institute of Astronomy (2011-2014), Director of the Photonics Research Center (2009-2014), Vice President for R&D and the Director of the Operation Center for Industrial Collaboration (2014-2016). Previously, Prof. Pan taught at National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) (1981-2009) and held visiting professorship at Osaka University (2004) and Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) (2008). Prof. Pan’s fields of study fall mainly in applied physics, laser science and engineering as well as photonics. Recent research highlights include pioneering the field of liquid crystal THz photonics, femtosecond-laser recrystallization and activation of silicon for TFT as well as novel THz generators and detectors. The latter were used in diverse applications such as diagnostics of technologically important materials for photovoltaics, assessing burn trauma and optical-network-compatible W-band (100 GHz or 0.1 THz) wireless communication Link at a data rate beyond 20 Gbit/s. Prof. Pan has received numerous honors in Taiwan. He is a Life Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of APS, OSA and SPIE. Prof. Pan has served as a Traveling Lecturer of OSA, a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Electron Device Society, a member of Commission C17 (Quantum Electronics) of IUPAP and Commission D (Electronics and Photonics) of URSI (2013 to date). Prof. Pan has published more than 270 refereed journal papers to date. He also holds 25 Taiwan patents and 17 US patents.
