Dr. Derek Nankivil is the Principal Engineer of Vision Products at the Center of Excellence in Research & Development at Johnson & Johnson Vision in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. Derek’s primary research objectives involve the fundamental science relating visual perception and retinal optical stimuli and the development of novel contact lenses. Derek received his B.Sc. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Central Florida, his M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Miami, and his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering with a certificate in Photonics from Duke University. He has performed research in the areas of nanomechanics, laser surgery, liquid crystal optical phased arrays, ocular growth and senescence, optomechanics of accommodation, corneal transplantation, accommodation restoration, intraocular lenses, tear film, ophthalmic imaging, virtual reality and art conservation. Derek is a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), Optica formally the Optical Society of America (OSA), and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE). He previously served on the Commercial Relations Committee of ARVO and presently serves on the Program Committee in Ophthalmic Technologies of SPIE. He has reviewed for Biomedical Optics Express, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, Ophthalmic & Physiological Optics, Optics Letters, Optica, PLOS One, Translational Vision Science & Technology, and the Journal of the Optical Society of America.
